Is Botox Cosmetic right for me? |
Having a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic is one way that you can invest in your appearance. Talking with your practitioner will help determine if BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you. BOTOX® Cosmetic was the most popular administered aesthetic procedure in the United States for the fourth year in a row (surgical and non-surgical combined). The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) estimates that almost 3.3 million treatments were performed in 2005 alone—that's an increase of almost 16% over 2004.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the only treatment approved by the FDA for the temporary relief of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age. With one simple ten-minute treatment, results can be seen within a couple of days and can last for as long as three to four months. Individual results may vary.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions? |
You may look in the mirror and see a marked improvement after treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic, in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows and the crow’s feet around your eyes. BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance. You can still frown or look surprised but without all the wrinkles and creases. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduces the contractions of the muscles that cause those persistent lines that have developed over time around your eyes and between your brows. Over the next few days, you may see an improvement that can last for as long as three to four months. Results may vary. If you do not continue treatments, the frown lines between your brows and around your eyes will gradually return. |

What can I expect at the doctor’s office? |
Additional questions you might have before you schedule your first BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment consultation may be: How long will it take? Will it hurt? How long will the results last? Following is what you can expect from the moment you arrive until your procedure is done. The day of your consultation. Allow time before your appointment for filling out forms. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you have and in addition, you will be asked about your expectations for treatment and if you have any allergies or any condition that wouldn't make you a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Following is what you can expect should you decide on BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. Before the procedure. You will be seated in a reclining chair, much like you find in a dentist's office, and an anesthetic cream will be administered. The procedure. First there will be a determination as to where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in the area you want treated. Several tiny injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic will then be administered directly into the muscles that cause those moderate to severe lines between the brows and/or around the eyes. The entire BOTOX® Cosmetic injection procedure takes approximately ten minutes and discomfort is usually minimal and brief. The benefit of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is that it's a simple, ten-minute, non-surgical process. A few tiny injections, and within days there can be a noticeable improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between the brows as well as a marked improvement to crow’s feet around the eyes. Results may vary but generally last for as long as three to four months and there’s no recovery time. You can even be done during your lunch break! |

What is Restylane made of? |
Restylane® is the first and only cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA,™ or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA™ is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. |
As you get older, your face loses it’s shape. Restylane® simply restores that fullness and provides a smoother contour to the face. |
Can Restylane replace surgical procedures? |
No. However, Restylane® is sometimes used in conjunction with surgery to fill out wrinkles that cannot be removed by surgery. |
How long does Restylane last? |
The average treatment results last six months or even longer. |
Yes. Restylane® has been used safely by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. Because Restylane® is non-animal-based and fully biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. This quality virtually eliminates any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days. |
How is Restylane different that other hyaluronic acid-based products? |
Unlike other hyaluronic acid-based products, such as those made from rooster combs, only Restylane® is non-animal based. This quality virtually eliminates any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. |
Is any of the material left in the skin after Restylane is degraded? |
No. Restylane® is completely degraded, leaving absolutely no traces of the injected material in the area injected. |
Are there any side effects to have the Restylane treatment? |
As with any injection, some common injection-related reactions might occur. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days. |
How is a Restylane treatment performed? |
During treatment, the crystal-clear Restylane® gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. When enhancing lips or facial contours, Restylane® adds volume and shape to the treated area. |
How long will the Restylane treatment session take? |
Treatment with Restylane® is a very quick and easy process. As no pre-test is needed, the treatment can be carried out immediately. A treatment generally takes 30 minutes. The time differs somewhat, depending on the correction you wish to have performed. |
What can be treated with Restylane? |
Although Restylane® has been used in more than one million treatments in over 60 countries to smooth wrinkles and deep facial folds and to enhance the appearance and fullness of the lips, in the U.S., it is currently indicated only for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane® can be used for smoothing out folds and wrinkles, lip enhancements and shaping facial contours. The most common areas are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of the mouth) and the lips, although other sites can also be treated. Very superficial or very deep wrinkles may be difficult to correct. Please consult with Dr. Karlin for an assessment. |
Most people find the injections relatively painless. They may prick a little. If you like, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area being treated prior to your procedure. When enhancing the lips, a local anesthetic injection is available and often requested by the patient. |
How soon will I see the results after a Restylane treatment? |
The results can be seen immediately. |
What will I look like after the Restylane treatment? |
Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days (up to a week). If the discomfort continues, please contact your provider. |
What should I think about before I have a Restylane treatment? |
Look at yourself in the mirror and think about the results you are expecting. |
What should patients do prior to a dermal filler treatment? |
Patients should avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, or high does of Vitamin E supplements for one week prior to treatment. This will help to minimize any bruising or bleeding at the injection site. |
What should I bear in mind after my treatment with Restylane? |
During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. If you have had a lip enhancement, avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold.

How is JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel different from BOTOX® Cosmetic? |
JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is a “next-generation” hyaluronic acid dermal filler that provides volume and is used to treat wrinkles and folds resulting from a loss of volume beneath the surface of the skin. JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel restores your skin's volume for a smooth, more youthful, natural look and feel. BOTOX® Cosmetic is not a filler. BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes muscle activity and is used to treat moderate to severe lines caused by the dominant frown muscles between the eyebrows (the glabellar area), on the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). By allowing these muscles to relax, wrinkles temporarily appear diminish for a smoother appearance. |

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. In addition to its use as a cosmetic treatment, hyaluronic acid has also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair. |
